Our Church

Church life is about deepening and expressing our relationship with God, and better serving him in the world. While “being religious” is often linked in peoples’ minds with church attendance, we attend so as to prepare ourselves for service in the world. “A ship in harbour is safe, but that is not what ships are for”. The same goes for Christians. Ships, and Christians, do have to go in for repairs and maintenance now and then, and to get new instructions. Our church is where that happens.

Elsewhere we have talked about our Faith and our people. In this section of the site, we will show you a little of the physical building and its contents. The church was built in 1911, using the neo-gothic for inspiration, and its exterior and interior appearance reflect that. We try to be true to that heritage while continuing to grow, and to express the Faith to successive generations.

Through the centuries of Christian experience, beauty has been found to be a useful metaphor for the holy. “Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness,” says the Psalm. Through beauty in its many forms we can express and recognize aspects of holiness that would otherwise elude our perception.

St. Michael’s embraces this understanding, and so along with our major emphasis on the written and spoken word, considerable attention is paid to the “beauty of holiness”. Music is one of these forms, as is the drama of the liturgy. And it can also be found in our stained glass, banners, and the physical arrangement of the church.

Each of the following will give you a glimpse of some aspects of our church.
