Christians are clearly called to service. The original early Christians stood out in their Roman world because they practiced compassion. Over and over, then and through the ages, we find Christians, often where others will not go, caring for the sick, caring for orphans, taking relief to disaster areas, providing shelter for the homeless, friendship to the lonely, assistance to the desperate. Many of the laws and institutions that we think of today as being part of normal life – hospitals, public health, public education, laws preventing slavery, and on and on – began as initiatives in the Christian community. In Christianity, compassion is not only a personal ethic, but an obligation to the community.
