Music at St.Michael's

Music as a part of worship has a long, long history! It has a capacity to move us in ways that mere words cannot, and to help us to connect with our innermost selves, and with God. It can be a lone voice chanting an ancient prayer, a full choir presenting an oratorio, guitars and banjos, organ and orchestra, or a log drum in the South Pacific. All express our humanity, and our thirst for God.

Following are the principal vocal groups at the Cathedral. In addition note that the Cathedral is fortunate to have a very substantial pipe organ (1500 pipes) that supports the choir at the 11:00 a.m. service.

CATHEDRAL SINGERS: The Cathedral Singers is a women's ensemble that leads the music at St. Michael's 9:15 am service on the second, fourth, and fifth Sundays of the month and sings for special services during Christmas, Lent, and Easter. They sing an eclectic mix of accompanied and unaccompanied music that includes traditional hymns, contemporary songs, songs from around the world, and music from the Taizé and Iona Communities. Rehearsals are every Tuesday evening from 7:00-8:30 pm in the cathedral. For more information contact Norene Morrow at 768-8418 or nmorrow@shaw.ca.

CATHEDRAL CHOIR: The Cathedral Choir is a four-part mixed choir that leads the singing at the 11:00 am service and sings for special services during Christmas, Lent, and Easter, as well as for Evensong and the annual Requiem Eucharist, which features the music from works of major composers such as Fauré and Mozart . They are dedicated to maintaining the musical tradition of the Anglican Church through the singing traditional hymns, English anthems, Anglican chant, plainsong melodies, traditional liturgical music and settings of the Eucharist. The choir rehearses on Thursday evening from 7:00-9:00 pm in the cathedral led by Norene Morrow, conductor and Sandra Fletcher, organist. For more information contact Norene at 768-8418 or nmorrow@shaw.ca.
